Countries of the World

Kids Maps - Countries of the WorldThe countries of the world. The entire world is divided into nearly 200 countries, and each country is beautifully unique with landscapes and hills and valleys, and even the people are unique with their languages, customs, governments, and laws. The smallest country in the world is the Vatican City, which is actually 1/5 of a square mile. The largest country in the world is Russia covering two thirds of Asia and one third of Europe. The width of Russia is so wide that there are 11 time zones. When looking at a map of all the countries of the world, the lines that you notice that separate each country are called borders. Some maps will show every country with a different color, and this will allow you to see the borders more clearly, with the shapes and sizes of each country. Some borders are long and jagged, while others might be smooth. On the other side of each border there could be a mountain, or a river, or possibly a large ocean or sea. It is important to spend time learning about geography, and how the borders were formed, and the history of the nations of the world.

Some of the political facts about this world are: there are 193 countries; there are 65 territories; the three largest countries are Russia, Canada, and China; the smallest country as previously mentioned his Vatican City; and the longest border in the world is the border that separates the United States and Canada, it is almost 4000 miles across.
